Pho (say like fur without the r), the traditional Vietnamese soup, is a great meal for the unemployed of San Francisco: it’s filling, easy to find, and cheap. Pho consists of a bowl of rice noodles in a clear, lightly spiced beef broth, topped with thin cuts of beef. Green onions, white onions, cilantro, Thai basil, Thai chili peppers, lemon or lime wedges, and bean sprouts are often served on the side to garnish.
We recommend the Pho tai nam, a mixture of rare and well-done beef, and the Pho ga, the Vietnamese take on chicken noodle soup. Prices typically range from $3.50 to $7 for a solid lunch serving, and $7 to $10 for dinner.

rules of thumb: the higher the avenue number, the cheaper, the more likelihood that tripe and tendons will be included.
