How To: Get more out of toast

Toast is the breakfast of the unemployed. It’s cheap, quick, and easy. But, whether you slather it with butter or jelly packets you took from Denny’s, toast can get a little boring. So, here are a few classic, easy, and cheap ways* to get a little more out of your toast.

Both recipes use the broiler. It gives your toast the perfect crunchy top and soft underbelly. But, beware as your broiler is extremely hot. Stand guard and check often, or you’ll burn.

Cheese Toast

  • Preheat broiler
  • Put out as many slices of bread as you’d like on a baking sheet or pan that can go in the oven (skillets work).
  • Choose a cheese. Block, soft cheeses like cheddar or types of jack work the best. We prefer sharp, or extra sharp cheddar.
  • Cut thin slices of cheese. Do not use thick, it’ll give you pools of semi-melted cheese and grease.
  • Cover toast with slices in one layer.
  • Put in preheated broiler.
  • Take out when it begins to bubble and visual parts of toast brown.
  • Enjoy as is or with a jelly like Apple Butter.

Cinnamon Toast

  • Preheat brolier
  • Put out as many slices of bread as you’d like on a baking sheet or pan that can go in the oven (skillets work).
  • Soften butter, but do not melt. Make it spreadable, but use real butter. Fake butter is crap. Its marriage of convenience and chemicals is not for the unemployed.
  • Mix together four teaspoons of sugar with one-eighth teaspoon of cinnamon. Adjust to your liking and/or quantity.
  • Spread butter evenly over toast.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture over toast
  • Put in preheated broiler.
  • Remove within a minute or two once cinnamon-sugar begins to melt and visible edges of bread toast.
  • Let cool for a little and enjoy as is or with a jam of your liking.
