How To: Double Feature

metreon1Once you’re unemployed, you realize movies are expensive. $9 to $14 often gets you at max two, often regrettable hours. If you happen to show up hungry or thirsty, your out another $7 to $100 for a bottle of water or coke, popcorn, and candy.

You can start taking advantage of your money by making each trip to the theater a double or triple feature. Here’s how:

  • Pick the right theater: We recommend the Metreon with its 15 screens in the same corridor.
  • Go during the day. You’re unemployed and have nowhere to be. Tickets during the day, especially the weekday, are cheaper and generally always available.
  • Scout the listings. Pick a lineup of two or more movies whose start times are between 100 to 120 minutes apart. Before that and you could miss the start, past that and you’ll have to wait in the hall as clean-up crews can occasionally ask for proof of purchase.
  • Start with, and purchase a ticket for, the movie you want to see. If you really want to see Friday the 13th then get the ticket, and go to that movie first.
  • Watch the credits and straggle out of the theater into the hall.
  • Use the bathroom.
  • Take out your stub, and aimlessly wander, as if looking for the right theater.
  • Pick your movie and enjoy
  • Repeat as many times as you can.
